History of DBT:

DBT was designed by Marsha M. Linehan in USA, using elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for clients struggling with Borderline Personality Disorder.  Dialectics refers to change by reconciling the two opposites ‘acceptance versus change’. (Marsha M. Linehan, 1993).

Why choose DBT?

Its approach takes a non-judgemental stance and helps individuals to find ways to accept themselves, regulate their emotions, reduce destructive behaviours and improve relationships.

Does DBT work?

It is evidenced based therapy that helps individuals who struggle to regulate their emotions. Studies have found a remission of symptoms after completion of DBT course.    Research has also indicated a reduction of self-harming, suicidal behaviours and reduced mental health hospitalisation.  However effectiveness may vary depending on individual factors.

Clients with a mental health diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), however we also accept individuals with characteristics of, who struggle to regulate emotions, without a formal diagnosis.  Nonetheless, a number of studies have been conducted focusing on DBT skills coaching and it was found that DBT skills were effective with eating disorders, addictive disorders, treatment –resistant depression and other disorders ( Linehan, 2015).
